Britain will continue to probe the 30-year-old 'umbrella' killing of Bulgarian dissident Georgy Markov despite Sofia's formal closure of the file on the infamous murder, Scotland Yard said.
A British MP meanwhile urged Bulgaria - where the investigation closes this week when its 30-year statue of limitations expires - to make an exception and keep open the case, which combined Cold War skullduggery and James Bond-style gadgetry.
The ex-communist country's intelligence services 'have singularly failed to show any significant support for clearing up this dreadful crime,' said opposition Conservative MP Julian Lewis.
'It really would be absolutely outrageous conduct if the Bulgarian government allowed the investigation to cease and the remaining evidence to be destroyed or handed back to the Bulgarian secret services,' he said.
Bulgaria's secret police have long been believed to be the perpetrator of the crime, in which Markov was stabbed in the leg with an umbrella as he waited for a bus on London's busy Waterloo Bridge on September 7, 1978.
He developed a high fever and died in hospital days later, and an autopsy revealed a tiny ricin-filled metal pellet embedded in his calf
