Sweeting joins from Credit Suisse where he was managing director and head of absolute return strategies for European, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) distribution.
At RAM, he will take over responsibility for the global distribution of the business' alternatives products, reporting to RAM sales and marketing director Jonathan Polin.
The appointment comes as RAM looks to rebrand its newly-created 75bn asset management business, comprised of RAM and Axial Investment Management, as Ignis Asset Management.
Ignis will become the umbrella brand for the business' fund management operations from November.
Polin said: 'Alternatives will be a key area for the business as we move forward and it is essential that we have the right people and structure in place to support our ambitious growth plans in this area.
'Tim brings with him a wealth of experience in the alternatives space and his appointment will be crucial to our success in gaining market share in this increasingly important area of the industry.'
Sweeting has over 20 years experience in financial markets, having also previously held roles such as head of sales for Europe and Middle East at DB Absolute Return Strategies, a division of Deutsche Asset Management.
He has also held senior roles at UBS O'Connor and HSBC Investment Bank

The president of Minnesota Atheists is the new vice president of the Atheist Alliance International.
August Berkshire was elected to the position when the national organization that serves as an umbrella group for 55 atheist and humanist groups throughout the United States and the world held its annual convention Sept. 25-28 in Long Beach, Calif.
Berkshire currently leads Minnesota Atheists, an organization that says it seeks to promote the positive contributions of atheism to society and to maintain separation of state and church.
Minnesota Atheists presents a weekly radio broadcast by that name on Air America Radio, KTNF (950 AM) at 9 a.m. Sundays along with a cable access TV show, newsletters and holds eight monthly meetings a year
